The Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications has taken serious, practical steps to adopt the low-cost carrier model as part of efforts to stimulate passenger traffic and introduce new destinations at Bahrain International Airport.
The minister, Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, was responding to a parliamentary proposal concerning the establishment of a budget airline in partnership with the private sector, according to our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
He pointed out that the proposal falls within the initiatives and priorities of the ministry to support economic development and the tourism sector in the kingdom.
This approach is being implemented through entering into agreements with major low-cost airlines, such as AirAsia, and in co-operation with the national carrier, Gulf Air, to operate flights to and from Bahrain, he said. This will directly contribute to diversifying affordable travel options for citizens and residents in the kingdom, the minister added.
