Nine graduates of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain were recently honoured at the institution’s prestigious Alumni Awards 2026.
The ceremony, held at the Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention and Spa, was attended by members of the university’s board of governors from Dublin and Bahrain, including Shaikha Mariam bint Hamad Al Khalifa.
RCSI Medical University of Bahrain president Professor Sameer Otoom and the senior management were also present.
Among the awardees, Dr Alalwan and Dr Alazzawi were unable to attend.

Launched in its new format this year, the Alumni Awards recognise nine graduates across four categories: Inspiring Excellence, Educator of the Year, Researcher of the Year and Community Impact and Philanthropy.
Candidates were selected through a rigorous nomination and review process led by the Alumni Awards committee, with nominations submitted by alumni, faculty and staff members.
“We are proud to celebrate alumni who choose to impact their communities and healthcare systems positively and sustainably,” Prof Otoom said.
“Their achievements reflect the growing global impact of our alumni network, who contribute to the enhancement of healthcare services in Bahrain and beyond, and serve as an inspiration to our students as future healthcare professionals, our staff and alumni community,” he added.
This year’s recipients reflect the global footprint of the university alumni, with graduates contributing to healthcare and education across Bahrain, the UAE, Ireland, the US and Nigeria.
RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s global alumni network includes more than 3,890 graduates in 38 countries. Through its Careers and Alumni Office, the university continues to support students in addressing current health challenges, empowering local communities through impactful engagement, and having a positive impact on healthcare and patient care.
The Alumni Awards 2026 recepients were:
Inspiring Excellence Award:
•Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital, Dubai paediatric pulmonary and paediatric sleep units head Dr Majid Al Teneiji (Class of 2011).
•Government Hospitals Bahrain consultant dermatologist and dermatology department head Dr Aysha Almoosa (Class of 2012).
•Royal Medical Services – King Hamad University Hospital, Bahrain nursing shift supervisor Aiman Alsaho (Class of 2017 BSc Nursing and 2024 MSc Nursing).
Educator of the Year Award:
•Salmaniya Medical Complex consultant radiologist Dr Tareq Al Taei (Class of 2012).
•Crown Prince Centre for Training and Medical Research – Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services training co-ordinator and simulation educator Ria Falamarzi (Class of 2014).
Researcher of the Year Award:
•Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital, USA advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist and heart failure director Dr Yusuf Alalwan (Class of 2015).
•RCSI, Ireland specialist registrar in general surgery Dr Mohammed Alazzawi (Class of 2013).
Community Impact and Philanthropy Award
•Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, Nigeria physician and public health advocate Dr Maryam Almustapha (Class of 2018).
•Bahrain Oncology Centre palliative and pain nurse Maha Albalooshi (Class of 2019).
Alongside the alumni awardees, SMC intern from the class of 2025 Dr Ayah Khalaf received the 2026 Intern Award.
