Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for AlUla Manara, a landmark astronomy and astro-tourism destination that will be home to one of the world’s largest observatories, featuring interactive exhibitions, and dedicated stargazing facilities, scientific research with immersive visitor experiences.
Located more than 70 kilometres north of AlUla in an area renowned for its exceptionally dark and clear skies, the project will house a main telescope with a diameter of four metres, in addition to two further telescopes measuring two metres each placing it among the largest observatories in the world. Developed by the Royal Commission for AlUla in partnership with the Saudi Space Agency, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and the SETI Institute, AlUla Manara will feature advanced research facilities, interactive exhibitions, observation platforms, and world-class stargazing experiences.
The project’s key differentiator is its unique blend of science, sustainability, and tourism. Designed to integrate seamlessly with AlUla’s natural landscape while preserving dark skies through strict light-pollution controls, AlUla Manara is expected to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position in astronomy and space sciences, attract global researchers and visitors, and establish AlUla as a leading destination for astro-tourism and scientific discovery.
