A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined BD10,000 after being convicted of importing and possessing narcotics with intent to promote and sell, the Public Prosecution said.
A co-defendant was handed a six-month jail term and fined BD100 on drug use charges.
The High Criminal Court also ordered the deportation of both expatriates, identified as Asians, upon completion of their sentences.
The case came to light after a package addressed to the first defendant, containing narcotics, was intercepted. Police then set up an ambush leading to his arrest.
According to the prosecution, the main defendant was part of a criminal network that distributed drugs using so-called ‘dead mail’ methods.
In another case, a woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined BD2,000 after being convicted of human trafficking charges, the Public Prosecution said.
The defendant, identified only as Asian, was also ordered to repatriate the female victim to her home country after she was found to have been exploited and made to carry out unauthorised tasks.
The High Criminal Court further ruled that the defendant will be deported upon completion of her sentence.
The case came to light after the prosecution received information about the alleged activities and launched an investigation, beginning with the victim’s testimony. The victim was subsequently transferred to a shelter operated by the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons.
During questioning, the defendant admitted the charges and was later referred to court, which found her guilty.
