Bahrain has achieved a major breakthrough in the treatment of sickle cell disease following the introduction of gene therapy and stem cell transplantation, consultant hematologist and oncologist and head of the Hereditary Blood Disorders Centre at Government Hospitals Dr Fatima Malallah said to our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
This advancement has shifted the approach from merely managing symptoms and complications to offering the possibility of a cure for selected patients based on precise medical criteria.
