First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Shaikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah said on Thursday that security authorities have intercepted nearly 95 per cent of drug shipments attempting to enter Kuwait.
Speaking to KUNA on the sidelines of the launch of the national anti-drug awareness campaign,"A Nation Protects You," Sheikh Fahad said the achievement reflects close coordination among relevant state agencies.
He stressed that combating drugs is a shared national responsibility involving government institutions, the private sector and civil society organisations.
Shaikh Fahad said drug traffickers continue to develop new concealment methods, prompting authorities to enhance security measures through advanced technologies and specialised training for Interior Ministry and Customs personnel.
He noted that authorities recently seized a shipment of A4 paper sheets saturated with narcotic substances, highlighting the role of continuous training and modern detection techniques in thwarting smuggling attempts.
The minister emphasised the family's central role in protecting young people from drug abuse, adding that public awareness remains one of the most effective tools in combating the problem.
He also praised the efforts of Customs and the General Department for Drug Control, as well as the Ministry of Health's role in providing addiction treatment services.
Shaikh Fahad described addiction as a treatable disease when appropriate care, determination and family support are available.
The exhibition aims to raise awareness among parents and educate them about the methods used by drug traffickers to target young people, he added, stressing that children and adolescents are the groups most in need of awareness campaigns.
During his tour, Sheikh Fahad reviewed the accompanying awareness activities and programmes organised with the participation of government agencies, private sector institutions and public benefit associations.
He was accompanied by Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs Dr. Amthal AlHuwailah, Minister of Justice Counsellor Nasser Al-Sumait and Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad AlAwadhi, who were briefed on initiatives aimed at enhancing public awareness of drug risks and prevention methods.
