TRIATHLON – A WORLD Cup silver medal for Taylor Knibb and a hard-charging fifth place for Vincent Luis highlighted another strong weekend of racing for Bahrain Victorious 13, with both triathletes delivering encouraging performances over the weekend as their respective world championship campaigns continue to build.
Knibb marked her return to World Cup racing with a silver medal in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary, while Luis ran his way into the top five at Ironman Frankfurt after an eventful day shaped by extreme weather.
Despite specialising in long-course racing in recent years, Knibb immediately reasserted her class in the sprint-distance format in her first World Cup appearance since 2019.
In Saturday’s semi-final, the American led from gun to tape, recording the fastest swim, bike and run splits to qualify for the final by a commanding 74 seconds.
She carried that form into Sunday’s final, leading out of the 750-metre swim before driving the pace on the bike to establish the decisive breakaway that would ultimately contest the podium, leaving the rest of the field nearly three minutes adrift.
With several months remaining before beginning her build towards the Ironman World Championship, Knibb said the opportunity to race in Tiszaujvaros was about embracing spontaneity, fun, and learning.
“It was kind of a dream race in a lot of ways for me, coming back to the World Cups and short-course,” the American said post-race. “I came here in 2018 and swore never again, but then doing the thing undoes the fear.”
Meanwhile, Luis continued his Ironman World Championship preparation with a top five finish at Ironman Frankfurt after organisers shortened the race due to extreme heat. The swim remained at the full 3.8-kilometre distance, while the bike was reduced from 180km to 120km and the marathon shortened to a half-marathon.
Luis exited the swim with the lead group in sixth place, just six seconds off the front, before finding himself isolated between packs on the bike.
Remaining composed and riding strongly into the second transition, he then produced one of the fastest runs of the day, carving through the field at a pace of sub-3:30 per km and dipping below 3:20 per km over the closing eight km to secure fifth.
The focus now shifts to Challenge Roth on Sunday, where Kat Matthews will lead Bahrain Victorious 13 into one of the sport’s premier long-distance races.
Unbeaten through three starts this season, the reigning Ironman Pro Series champion arrives in Germany looking to continue her winning streak.
