CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Lenny Martinez claimed a strong top 10 finish yesterday in a challenging second stage in the 113th edition of the Tour de France.
Martinez completed the 168.5-kilometre leg, which started in Spanish city of Tarragona and ended in Barcelona, in eighth place overall – as part of a trailing group that was only three seconds behind winner Isaac Del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who secured first place in a time of three hours 40 minutes and one second.
Del Toro was joined on the stage two podium by teammate Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
Amongst other Bahrain Victorious squad members yesterday, Antonio Tiberi finished 46th, Damiano Caruso was 73rd, Robert Stannard took 76th, Matej Mohoric was 151st, Phil Bauhaus ranked 159th, Kamil Gradek was 163rd, and Vlad Van Mechelen finished 167th from the 183 competitors.
With the results, Martinez climbed six places to ninth to crack the top 10 of the general classification, which is currently topped by Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma-Lease a Bike. He also rose three spots on the best young rider rankings, where he is now fifth – just 37 seconds behind Del Toro in first place.
This year’s Tour de France continues today with the third stage, covering 195.9km and starting from Granollers before ending in Les Angles.
Following today’s leg, the race crosses into France for the remainder of the three-week, 21-stage event, which covers a total of 3,319km and 54,303m of elevation.
