HORSERACING – Bahrain was in the spotlight yesterday at Newmarket Racecourse in the UK with three high-profile Group races sponsored by the kingdom taking place.
Part of a top-class programme on the first day of Newmarket’s July Festival were the Group Three Bahrain Trophy Stakes, won by Point of Law, the horse owned by King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the UK; the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes, sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain, won by Rebel’s Romance; and the Group Two Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes, won by Inner City Blues.
In attendance for yesterday’s events at Newmarket were Bahrain Ambassador to the UK Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Sustainable Development and Bahrain Economic Development Board chief executive Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) High Committee member and CEO Yusuf Buheji, and a number of REHC High Committee members along with other officials.
In the Group Three Bahrain Trophy Stakes, which was run over 13 furlongs, Point Of Law won for King Charles III and Queen Camilla and trainers John and Thady Gosden, with jockey James Doyle in the saddle.
Point of Law bagged more than £113,000 in winnings for his connections and finished a half-length ahead of Galiyan, who came second for owner Rashid Al Saud, trainer Balding, and jockey Murphy.
Del Maro claimed third racing for Godolphin, Charlie Appleby, and William Buick, which was part of their impressive day at the track.
Point of Law’s connections were presented their awards by REHC High Committee members Khaled Hussein Taqi and Ali Habib Qasim.
In the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes, sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain, Godolphin-owned Rebel’s Romance won the 12-furlong event for Appleby and with Buick in the saddle.
They came away with more than £93,000 in winnings for first place, and were presented their awards by Minister Alkhulaif.
Rebel’s Romance finished with a half-length’s margin ahead of runner-up Arabian Crown, also competing for Godolphin and Appleby but with Doyle taking the reins.
Almeric crossed the line in third place for Miss K Rausing, Andrew Balding, and Oisin Murphy.
Meanwhile, Inner City Blues won the Group Two Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes, making for another impressive success on the day for the Godolphin, Appleby, and Buick triumvirate.
They were presented their prizes by Shaikh Fawaz and REHC High Committee member Kamal Murad Ali.
Inner City Blues took the six-furlong event, and came away with over £70,000 in prize money, by a length-and-a-quarter from Adaay Of Scarlett, who secured second place for owners Svg, Exact Lifestyle Ltd and Owen and trainer Hugo Palmer, with Murphy as their jockey. Hickory Lad was third for J Toes and J O’Loan, Phillip Makin, and Sam James.
