BOXING – BAHRAIN’S boxing national team captured a sensational seven medals, headlined by four gold, at the Braga Open Boxing 2026 competition held in Braga, Portugal.
The gold medals were won by Jayden Price, Mohamed Shafi, Mohamed Attia, and Alawi Hashim in their respective divisions.
The kingdom’s fighters also came away with one silver medal, bagged by Mohammed Moamen, and two bronze medals, claimed by Maryam Khamis and Rasheed Wahid.
This year’s Braga Open Boxing event brought together nearly 800 amateur fighters, both men and women of various ages, from nearly 200 clubs representing more than 20 countries.
Price was one of the stars of the Bahraini squad. Along with his gold medal in the men’s under-17 A 54kg category, he also came away with the award for best junior boxer.
Price secured his title after defeating Tilio Tonarelli from France in the final. The bout was scored 3-0 in his favour for the unanimous-decision victory.
Shafi won his gold medal in the men’s senior 60kg one division. Shafi was in scintillating form throughout the competition, winning all three of his bouts by unanimous decision. He defeated Spaniard Jose Enmanuel Lebron Hernandez in the final. Earlier, Shafi beat Rudi Pestana in the semi-finals and Ruben Santana in the quarters, both from Portugal.
Attia added his gold medal for Bahrain in the men’s under-17 C 75kg class. He too was in fine form, winning both his bouts with referee stoppages in the first round. Attia secured his gold medal after beating Martim Pereira from Portugal in their final bout, after earlier taking care of Norwegian Mathias Bergmann Markussen in the semis.
Hashim came away with his gold medal in the men’s under-15 C 46kg category. He won three bouts en route to securing his title, which he claimed with a split-decision win against Portuguese Diego Teixiera, with the final being scored 2-1 in his favour. Hashim previously defeated Spaniard Enzo Sanchez Gandul in their semi-final, which was abandoned in the first round. Hashim began his medal bid with a victory by split decision against Antonio Lavado, also from Spain.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Moamen came away with his silver medal after losing by unanimous decision in the men’s under-19 A 55kg final to Almalki Faris from Saudi Arabia.
Amongst Bahrain’s bronze-medallists, Khamis took third in the women’s senior 54kg while Wahid climbed the podium in the men’s elite A 85kg.
