A business owner and his company – which stood trial as an ‘artificial person’ – have lost their final appeals in Bahrain’s highest court, after being convicted of non-disclosure of finances.
The Lower Criminal Court previously convicted the man of not disclosing company finances to the government, and handed down a three-month suspended sentence with a BD100 bail.
Judges ordered that the prison sentence be removed if he submitted a disclosure form to relevant authorities, within two weeks of the first verdict.
The real estate company was found guilty of being used to commit the crime, through its name and accounts, and for its advantage. The business was fined BD2,000.
The proprietor appealed the sentence at the High Criminal Appeals Court, and judges chose to exchange the prison sentence for a BD500 fine, suspended for three years.
Both the man and the company took the case to Bahrain’s highest court, the Cassation Court, to contest the ruling again, but the plea was rejected.
