The Health Ministry has allocated health centres across Bahrain to ensure convenient access to breast cancer screening services. It has also launched a weekly breast assessment clinic at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), where a team of specialised doctors reviews reports and provides appropriate follow-up care for positive cases.
Mammograms Films are sent from all the centres to a centralised screening administration office at Dar Roufaidh.
A mammogram is a special low-dose X-ray picture of the inside of the breast. Doctors use it to find early signs of breast cancer, small lumps, or tiny calcium spots before any physical symptoms show up.
A specialised radiologist reads the films and suspicious cases are referred to the breast assessment clinic at SMC for additional imaging or procedure. Positive cases are referred to a team of surgeons for appropriate management.
Screening is free of charge and is held six days a week at the following medical centres:
1. Hamad Kanoo Medical Centre (Isa Town)
2. National Bank of Bahrain Medical Centre (Arad)
3. Naim Medical Centre (Manama)
4. Al Aali Medical Centre (Aali)
5. Mohamad Jassim Kanoo Medical Centre (Hamad Town)
All five centres are equipped with the latest mammography machines and diagnostic equipment. These machines are tested and maintained on a regular basis by highly trained engineers from the Health Ministry.
Mammograms are performed by trained technicians and requires only 15 to 20 minutes.
