HORSERACING – Avionics, owned by Prime Minister’s Court Minister and Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, triumphed yesterday in the Bailey Family Investments/EBF Maiden Stakes held at Chepstow Racecourse in Wales.
The two-year-old bay colt emerged victorious after seven furlongs for trainer Andrew Balding, with leading jockey and Bahrain Turf Club ambassador Tom Marquand in the saddle.
Marquand and Avionics were prominent at the start and led over two furlongs out.
They maintained their strong stride but faced a tough challenge from Grove Street, ridden by Joe Leavy, who briefly took the lead heading into the final furlong in a gruelling two-horse battle.
But Marquand and Avionics managed to outduel their chief rivals and surge ahead towards the finish, holding on to claim the win by just a neck.
Grove Street and Leavy were runners-up for owner Ryan Kent and trainer Brian Meehan, while taking a distant third was Talamon, racing for Mr and Mrs R Scott, George Boughey, and Billy Loughnane.
La Bassette, ridden by Rossa Ryan, and It’s A Dream, with Ben Ffrench Davis on the saddle, completed the classification in fourth and fifth, respectively.
