Police in Mumbai have apprehended a 40-year-old homeless man in connection with the horrific mutilation and killing of cats in the city’s Chembur area.
Residents in the Panjrapol neighbourhood of Chembur had been discovering mutilated bodies of cats and kittens since mid-August, with at least 20 felines reportedly found dead. Following the incidents, PETA India offered a reward of Rs50,000 for information leading to the perpetrator.
A breakthrough came when officers launched an investigation after six cats were attacked and killed with a sharp weapon in a single night. Local cat feeder Rubina Pathan reported the incident to the RCF police station, prompting authorities to act.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from several areas, including Kamawadi, Panjrapol, and Shani Mandir, which enabled them to identify and detain the suspect, identified as Shiva Keshav Joshi.
During questioning, Joshi admitted to killing multiple cats.
A police investigation and a mental health evaluation are underway to determine the motive behind the acts of animal cruelty.
