An Indian national was killed after the cargo vessel MV Cape Dao came under attack while en route to India, the Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed on Wednesday.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the vessel was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, leaving it on fire and adrift. All crew members were evacuated, with two casualties reported.
The Embassy of India in Muscat stated that it was coordinating closely with Omani authorities to ensure the safety of those on board, including 19 Indian nationals.
The mission said in a statement on X that contact had been made with the deceased sailor’s family.
The Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) identified the deceased in a social media post as Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the FSUI, the vessel was hit by two torpedoes, putting civilian seafarers operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz at grave risk.
Calling for safe passage, immediate accountability and justice for Yadav, the union said: "Assurances mean nothing. Innocent civilian seafarers are being slaughtered in and around Hormuz."
