His Majesty King Hamad will open today the National Assembly’s fifth session of the sixth legislative term and deliver his keynote Royal Address, marking the start of a new phase of legislative and oversight work.
The opening comes in implementation of Royal Order No 31 of 2026, which called on the Shura Council and Parliament to convene this afternoon for the opening of the fifth session.
The new session has particular significance amid political and economic developments in the region and the world, which require strengthening stability, sustaining the development process and safeguarding national achievements.
The Bahraini people hope the new session will see efforts by both councils to address issues affecting citizens’ life, develop legislation and monitor the implementation of government plans and programmes. These efforts are expected to improve the quality of services, handle citizens’ living priorities and meet their aspirations for further development accomplishments, through co-operation between the legislative and executive branches.
After the opening ceremony, the Shura Council will hold its first procedural session, which will include the reading of the Royal Order and a speech by the council’s chairman marking the start of the session. Members will then elect the first and second deputy chairmen in accordance with the council’s internal regulations.
Jamal Fakhro and Dr Jihad Al Fadhel are expected to continue in their positions as first and second deputy chairmen, respectively, with the outcome to be determined through the election process.
Meanwhile, Parliament will hold its procedural session under the chairmanship of Ahmed Al Musallam. MPs will also elect the first deputy speaker and the heads of the standing committees. Consultations are ongoing over nominations and agreements on the distribution of parliamentary positions for the new session.
