The UAE has introduced comprehensive new traffic regulations scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2027.
The updated framework introduces strict regulations covering vehicle ownership limits, driving tests, overtaking rules and daily driving time limits.
Standard vehicle licences will remain valid for one year, though owners may request a two-year registration period for new cars.
Individual vehicle ownership will be capped at a maximum of five cars per person.
Motorists registering or renewing a third, fourth or fifth vehicle will be subject to additional fees.
Electric scooter permits will become mandatory across the country, with the minimum operating age lowered to 15.
All electric scooters must meet new technical safety standards, including operational front, rear and brake lights alongside audible warning devices.
A strict daily limit will restrict all motorists from driving more than nine hours within any 24-hour period.
The daily driving duration restriction applies universally to all drivers rather than heavy transport operators alone.
Under revised road rules, drivers must overtake exclusively using the left lane before returning immediately to the right lane after completing the manoeuvre.
Authorities have identified six specific locations and conditions where overtaking is strictly prohibited.
