Animated epic fantasy film Wildwood is out now in theatres.
Starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee, the story follows Prue McKeel, a 13-year-old girl who must find the courage to rescue her abducted infant brother Mac.
She is joined by her classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay) as they travel to an enchanted forest, where they find a manor and learn about a coming war from Alexandra (Carey Mulligan), a mysterious woman who tragically lost her son.
Based on the 2011 namesake novel by Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis, the film was produced by Laika stop-motion animation studio.
The studio’s previous creations include Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012).
With a theatrical runtime of 131 minutes, Wildwood is the longest stop-motion-animated film by run-time, and has been in development since 2011.
In an interview, studio chief executive and film director Travis Knight spoke about the movie taking 16 years to be completed.
“There was so much spectacle. There were so many characters and locations. It was really, really challenging to pull off,” he said.
“And in fact, it’s only because of all the technological advancements we’ve been able to do on the five previous films that we were even able to take something of this scale on. It was all incredibly hard to do — and yet I think it’s an extraordinary achievement,” he added.
