Newly elected Michigan Senator Abdul El Sayed has become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate after defeating Republican candidate Mike Rogers.
In his victory speech, El Sayed addressed US President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance.
"JD, habibi, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you are constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January," El Sayed said, addressing Vance.
He also targeted Trump, who had repeatedly criticised him throughout the election campaign.
"I know you struggle with my name, so after JD swears me in, you can just go on and call me Senator," he said.
The 42-year-old former public health official focused his campaign on lowering costs for working families and reducing corporate influence in politics.
