PEOPLE with cases lodged against them at the Sharia courts will have a maximum of two months to show up for hearings rather than the existing six months.
The Shura Council yesterday unanimously approved an amendment proposed by parliament to the 1986 Sharia Courts Procedures Law, which aims at having verdicts issued faster in divorce, alimony and inheritance cases.
Shura members said during yesterday’s weekly session that some accused show up before the six-month deadline ends to reschedule hearings and then disappear for the same period, delaying proceedings for years.
The amendment will be referred to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification following parliament’s approval last month.
Meanwhile, Shura offered its support to the newly-elected 18-member board of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
“We will offer our utmost support to the new board whether legislative, consultative or through joint projects to enable it to take its role in developing the economy and further boosting business in Bahrain,” read a statement issued by Shura chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh’s office.
