In the latest sweep of citizenship revocations in Kuwait, 1,266 individuals and their dependants have lost their nationality, according to a list published in the official Kuwait Gazette. Among those named are two of the country's most celebrated footballers.
Former national goalkeeper Nawaf Al Khaldi served as Kuwait's first-choice keeper between 1998 and his retirement in 2017. He made 115 appearances for his country and played 325 games for Qadsia SC, winning the league title nine times.
Also included is Saleh Al Sheikh, a retired midfielder for Qadsia SC and the national team. Frequently cited as Kuwait's most decorated footballer, Al Sheikh won the league seven times, the Emir Cup three times, and the Crown Prince’s Cup four times during a career spanning from 2000 to 2022. He is currently the assistant coach at Qadsia SC.
The decision to revoke their citizenship follows recent reforms to Kuwait’s nationality laws.
