A NEW website has been created to help reunite people with their lost pets.
Pet Chip Bahrain allows users to register their microchipped pets for free.
The aim is to allow people who find lost pets to check the online database and identify the animals’ owners.
It has been created by 38-year-old veterinary clinic manager Sean De Souza, who identified a need for a central registry of microchipped pets in Bahrain.
“The problem is that without a central register, there is no way to connect a pet’s microchip number with the contact information of the owner,” he explained.
“There are numerous brands of microchip and thus there isn’t any particularly joined up thinking between the manufacturers.
“Currently, a person who finds a pet would normally take it to a humane society or veterinary clinic, where they would scan for a microchip.
“The vet clinic or humane society then either publishes this information on their social media, or e-mails around the various clinics asking if the microchip was implanted by them.
“It’s terribly inefficient and relies heavily on the responsiveness of the clinic or humane society.
“With the petchipbahrain.org website, the vet clinic or humane society can simply type in the microchip number and, if it is registered, the owner is e-mailed and alerted.”
The registry is free of charge and covers all types of animals that can receive a microchip, including dogs, cats, horses and rabbits.
