TRADITIONAL games are seeing a revitalisation thanks to a Ramadan festival.
The Nasser Bin Hamad Ramadan Festival, which was launched at the start of Ramadan, has proven to be a huge success, drawing in people of all ages to enjoy the variety of traditional and video games.
More than 4,000 participants are competing for thousands of dollars worth of prizes during the festival, which will run until the 20th day of Ramadan that will fall on May 25.
It is being held at the Isa Sports City under the patronage of Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the King’s representative for charity work and youth affairs, as well as the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport and Royal Charity Organisation chairman.
The festival was visited by Riffa Sports Club vice chairman Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed bin Isa Al Khalifa, where they listened to a detailed explanation of the competitions.
“This festival is able to bring in young Bahrainis interested in traditional games and electronic sports, and contribute to create an exciting competitive atmosphere in the holy month,” said Shaikh Khalifa.
“It also contributes to attracting Bahraini youth and introducing them to traditional games as new generations are more interested in video games.”
The traditional games include Dominos, Chess, Carrom (singles and doubles), Ludo and card games such as six-a-side Kott and Hand. The festival also has competition for electronic games such as PUBG, PlayStations 2K Basketball, and FIFA.
More than $200,000 has been allocated as prize money for up to 10 winners in each game.
Cash prizes of BD50 are also being given away to attendees at the festival in addition to airline tickets through the Majlis Al Mawrooth television programme, which is broadcast daily on Bahrain TV at 11 pm.
The festival also includes an exhibition of productive families, a special section for children’s games, recreational activities and food trucks.
