Los Angeles: The mid-season return of 'Grey's Anatomy' will see ABC's medical heroine in peril.
In a brand new trailer for the Feb. 11 episode, released by the network on Wednesday, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is violently attacked by an uncontrollable patient, and it looks like her life is on the line.
In Season 12, the storyline of Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) death continues to come full circle, as the first person to call for help when Meredith is attacked is Penny (Samantha Sloyan), the doctor who is responsible for Derek's death.
While plot details for the remainder of the season have not been revealed, it seems highly unlikely Meredith will die, and if she survives, it appears the back half of the season could involve the aftermath of Meredith's attack, which would include having a polarizing, but life-saving, friend in Penny on her side.
The premiere episode was directed by Denzel Washington, marking the Oscar-winner's television directorial debut.
The second half of Season 12 will also deal with the feud between Owen (Kevin McKidd) and new doc Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), which apparently revolves around history with Owen's sister.
'Grey's' will also see more of intern Andrew, as actor Giacomo Gianniotti has been upped to a series regular.
'Grey's Anatomy' returns Feb. 11, kicking off ABC's 'TGIT' block at 8 p.m., followed by 'Scandal' and 'How To Get Away with Murder.'
