Bahrain captain Sayed Mohammed Jaffar said that the team played like true champions to clinch the 24th Gulf Cup crown in Doha.
Jaffar, who arrived home yesterday along with team-mates to heroes’ welcome, said they deserved to win the title after having pulled off crucial victories throughout the championship.
He praised the discipline shown by the players in the tournament and also thanked the supporters for backing the team.
Team-mate Waleed Al Hayam said all the players gave their best performances in the final against a strong Saudi team which included a number of prominent stars.
He dedicated the victory to the fans and said that the team was looking forward to more achievements in the future.
Mohammed Al Rumaihi, who netted the goal of the final, said that the team’s achievement was a result of the combined efforts of the players as well as the technical and administrative staff.
Young star Mohamed Marhoon said their joy after winning the title was indescribable.
“It was our long-awaited goal and the dream has been fulfilled,” he said.
Defender Ahmed Bughammar said that the team’s achievement is a fitting reply to the critics who doubted their capability. He said that the outstanding performances of the team in the tournament reflects the efforts put in by the players and support staff, praising the discipline show by the players and their focus towards achieving the desired goal.
Midfielder Kamil Al Aswad said that the team managed to rise to expectations and came up with commendable performances in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Football Association board member Mohamed Al Hammadi thanked the wise leadership for its support to Bahraini sports.
He praised the support of His Majesty the King’s representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and SCYS first deputy chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Al Hammadi also praised coach Helio Sousa for his commitment and strategic brilliance.
