SEVENTH seed Anna Kalinskaya continued her giant-killing run yesterday at the Bahrain Tennis Club Courts in Juffair scalping another seed on way to booking a place in today’s women’s final of the Bahrain ITF Futures Tennis Tournament.
The 595 ranked Russian this time accounted for fifth seed Katharina Lehnert of the Philippines, ranked 444, winning the match 6-2, 6-4.
Kalinskaya had upset top seed Jia-Jing Lu of China, ranked 205, in the quarter-finals late on Thursday in a three-set thriller 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-5.
Kalinskaya takes on another giant-killer Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia, ranked 511, in the final.
Mihalikova continued her own fairy tale run upsetting another seed on way to the final, this time stunning third seed Prerna Bhambri of India, ranked 401, with ease 6-2, 6-2.
Mihalikova upset second seed Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman, ranked 367, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
In the other quarter-finals on Thursday, Lehnert had an easy time cruising past fourth seed Kamila Kerimbayeva of Kazakhstan ranked 413, 6-1, 6-1 while Bhambri rallied from a set down to beat eighth seed Vivian Heisen of Germany, ranked 603, 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4.
There was no such drama in the men’s event as top seed Scott Griekspoor of the Netherlands, ranked 331, cruised past unseeded Cameron Silverman of the US, ranked 956, 6-2, 6-4.
Griekspoor takes on third seed Yannick Maden of Germany, ranked 547, in today’s final.
Maden also won his semi-finals in straight sets beating compatriot and sixth seed Tobias Simon, ranked 597, 6-4, 6-4.
Today’s women’s final starts at 3pm and the men’s not before 5pm.
