A RIGHTS group has urged a top UN official to push Qatar to release Bahrain-based fishermen detained in Doha.
The Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) has sent a complaint to the newly-elected Human Rights Council president Nazhat Khan, ahead of the council’s 46th regular session which started yesterday and runs until March 23.
BHRWS secretary general Faisal Fulad also asked the UN official to ask Doha to return all Bahrain-registered vessels it has impounded over the years.
“Qatar’s actions towards Bahraini fishermen have been brutal in the last 10 years,” said Mr Fulad.
“It has arrested fishermen, including expatriates, in a hostile manner and still refuses to return Bahraini fishing boats.”
He cited the case of four Bangladeshi fishermen employed by Bahrainis who were sentenced to three months in jail and imposed a fine of BD300 each.
The four Bangladeshis are Mohammed Miah, Alom Miah, Jony Nirongon and Rajbanshi Doial.
“Our legal team is ready to take up their case in Qatar’s court to ensure they are compensated and released following a fair trial.”
Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa in December said over the past 10 years, Qatar has stopped 650 boats and 2,153 fishermen with official Bahraini IDs.
