MANAMA: Bahrain has emerged as a regional hub for electronic games and information and communication technology (ICT) while constantly seeking to diversify its economy away from oil.
Youth and Sports Affairs Ministry’s Assistant Under-Secretary for Support and Initiatives Sarah Ishaq Hassan said, “The focus on nurturing start-ups, advanced technology regulations and smart public-private partnerships with global digital infrastructure providers have created a highly supportive and connected environment that allows game developers to thrive and test their potential.”
The Arab electronic games market hosts about 336 million players in this growing space. The electronic games market in the Middle East and North Africa is valued at more than $4 billion, making it one of the most important and fastest growing gaming markets in the world. The value of the electronic games market in the Mena region is expected to hit $6bn by year-end, she told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
Investment Development executive director at the Economic Development Board (EDB) Musab Abdulla said the kingdom has started enhancing its economic growth at an early stage and many sectors are expected to play a significant role in supporting such efforts. These include modern technology sectors, namely digital entertainment such as electronic games and sports, which will contribute to creating job opportunities in the local market.
