A special court for children involved in criminal cases was opened yesterday at the headquarters of the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry, Diplomatic Area.
The Restorative Justice Court for Children will handle crimes committed by children at the time the crime was committed.
The new reforms are in line with the provisions of the Children’s Restorative Justice and Protection from Abuse Law, which will come into effect from Wednesday.
The law also stipulates the establishment of a judicial committee to investigate cases where a child is endangered or ill-treated, and in cases where a child is considered at risk if he has not exceeded the age of 15 full calendar years.
The committee will also investigate acts committed by children and which may constitute a felony or misdemeanour.
Chaired by a Child Correctional Court judge, the committee will feature a member of the specialised prosecution for children, to be nominated by the Supreme Judicial Council, in addition to an expert commissioned by the committee.
