TERRIFIC twins Aisha and Amna Khaled have been highlighted by the Education Ministry as models of dedication, determination and goodwill.
The eight-year-old sisters have just returned to the classroom at Fatima Bint Al Khattab Primary School for Girls in Riffa, for the start of their Grade Three adventure.
Wheelchair-bound Amna suffers from Escobar Syndrome, a rare congenital condition causing joint contractures, and the challenges she face have not stopped her from excelling at school.
Aisha, also an impressive student, has dedicated her time to helping Amna and motivating others around her on campus to achieve good grades and take part in all school activities.
“Aisha’s unmatched kindness, support and help also extend to reaching others, especially her classmates, championing her amongst her peers,” said the ministry.
“Amna’s strong frame of mind and will to defeat all the challenges she face is also exemplary and spreads hope among students that whatever the circumstances, anything is possible.”
Amna also suffers from osteosclerosis and curvature of the spine and, although having undergone surgery in Saudi Arabia, is likely to remain wheelchair-bound for life.
Starting with the morning assembly until the final bell, Aisha can be seen being supportive of her sister and, according to their mother, Amal Al Bineid, it’s been that way since the very beginning.
“I have tried to nurture and install a caring and giving attitude in both girls and I’m very proud of them,” she said. The mother-of-five also praised the Education Ministry for implementing a successful integration policy in state schools, which enabled Amna to join Aisha in the same class.
“This had a great impact on Amna and has subsequently reflected positively on her academic achievements and happiness,” she added.
The ministry said it remains keen to provide services that enhance a culture of integration, caring and quality education for all.
“We are very proud of the twins and, by highlighting their story, we are sure they will inspire many other students,” said the ministry.
Ms Al Bineid has three daughters and two sons. The twins were born at the BDF Hospital.
