MANAMA: An urgent proposal to open up the market for insurance companies to provide policies for housemaids has been presented by MPs today.
The proposal, which will be debated during Parliament’s session tomorrow, has been presented by five MPs led by Parliament public utilities and environment affairs committee chairman Khalid Bu Onk.
An option has been available since August thanks to a Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) initiative through one insurance company.
Mr Bu Onk believes market forces would help drive down the cost of policies.
“People are interested in getting housemaids insured but the price is not right,” he claimed.
“This is why the market needs to be opened up to allow dynamic competition that in return would benefit the progress of the new system.”
Insurance policies could cover a range of benefits such as the cost of private health treatment to expenses lost on flights should a maid fail to honour her contact.
