THE use of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational institutions has resulted in major developments in the delivery and quality of education, stated global experts yesterday.
This, they asserted, helps society develop in a more efficient way.
The experts were speaking yesterday during the first virtual Bahrain International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education.
It was organised by the Global Artificial Intelligence Group in partnership with Shaikh Nasser Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Centre and held under the patronage of Higher Education Council secretary general and deputy chairperson of its board of trustees Dr Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa.
“Artificial intelligence is the attempt to create machines that can do things previously possible only through human cognition,” said Dr Shaikha Rana yesterday.
“It is about finding patterns in a sea of data – correlations that would not be immediately intuitive or comprehensible to humans – and then using those patterns to make decisions.
“Primarily, educational artificial intelligence is housed in two-dimensional software processing systems such as chatbots and discussion platforms.”
Demand
She revealed that according to the recent “AI in Education Market Research Report” from Research and Markets, the global AI in education market will reach around $25.7 billion in 2030 – up from just $1.1b in 2019.
She highlighted that the largest demand for AI has in fact been from learning platforms – due to the increasing preference for remote and online education courses – even prior to the pandemic.
“The conference displayed how AI is becoming an integral part of universities,” said Artificial Intelligence Society Bahrain president and ICT researcher Dr Jassim Haji.
“Especially in areas of research, computer vision for grading assignments, speech recognition, auditory interactivity and data privacy.
“This is in addition to synthesising responses to student questions, supporting students for studies selections and assisting in administration.”
The conference is part of a series of events that began with the AI in Sports conference under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
