THE government yesterday pledged to continue subsidising electricity and water for Bahrainis with one household.
Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Wael Al Mubarak yesterday said citizens with one home will benefit from a 90pc discounted rate until they exceed the consumption limit, after which it will be reduced by 50pc.
He was replying to a question during a Press conference at the Gudaibiya Palace.
Bahrainis with one house qualify for a subsidised electricity rate of just 3 fils per unit, but if they exceed 3,000 units in a month, the rate increases to 9 fils per unit for additional electricity consumed. Those exceeding 5,000 units are charged 16 fils for each unit.
A series of rate increases since 2016 has seen the cost of electricity shoot up to 29 fils per unit, while the water rates are 750 fils per unit.
“Despite the high cost of electricity and water, we are committed to support Bahrainis. Citizens with one household are benefiting from a 90pc rate cut until they exceed a set limit after which they will get a 50pc cut,” said Mr Al Mubarak.
The GDN reported earlier that the cost of electricity production is 22.9 fils per unit and 535 fils for water production per unit.
The authority purchased BD388m worth of electricity and water from private companies in 2019. However, a total of BD415m was paid last year due to an increase in gas prices and rising demand for electricity and water.
