A TOTAL of 100 Filipino workers were repatriated from Bahrain on New Year’s day as part of ongoing initiatives by the Philippines government to assist its distressed nationals abroad.
“This New Year, our Middle East mission ends as we return to Manila together with 100 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Bahrain,” Foreign Affairs Under-Secretary for Migrant Workers Sarah Lou Arriola posted on her Twitter account.
“This Department of Foreign Affairs(DFA)-facilitated repatriation was made possible by the Philippine Embassy in Bahrain.”
She visited Bahrain last week and held meetings with several officials.
The Manila Bulletin reported that more than 500 distressed Filipinos from different countries who were affected economically due to Covid-19 pandemic returned home last month.
Earlier, the embassy was instrumental in helping repatriate nearly 60 stranded overseas Filipinos, on November 26.
Between December 20 and 22, 152 stranded Filipinos left the country in two repatriation groups that included detainees, its shelter wards, medical patients and children.
The embassy said that last year 628 distressed Filipinos returned home through its repatriation programme which covered the airfare, immigration penalties and other expenses.
