A woman in Abu Dhabi has been ordered to pay a man AED5,000 (approx. BD515) in civil compensation after insulting and threatening him on WhatsApp, bringing her total financial liability to AED15,000.
The victim had filed a lawsuit in the Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Claims Court seeking AED20,000 (approx. BD2,060) in damages following a favourable ruling in a criminal court. In that judgment, the court found the woman guilty, fined her AED10,000 (approx. BD1,030), and barred her from accessing the information network for three months. The court also ordered the cancellation of her phone number and WhatsApp account.
Following her criminal conviction, the civil court ruled that the woman was liable for material and moral damages, ordering her to pay AED5,000 to the victim alongside legal fees and court expenses. The court noted that the man incurred material losses from reporting the incident to police and public prosecutors, alongside moral distress caused by the offensive messages.
