A Lawyerhas been charged over comments he made about the death of an inmate in police custody.
The lawyer claimed in a Bahraini newspaper on Thursday that the deceased, Hassan Jassim Hassan Al Haiki, suffered wounds and bruises – adding there was criminal suspicion surrounding his death.
This is despite the Interior Ministry earlier announcing that the 35-year-old died from natural causes at Salmaniya Medical Complex, as he suffered from a medical condition.
The lawyer was yesterday charged with publicly disseminating false information.
The deceased was arrested along with two other suspects in connection with an explosion in Eker on June 30 that killed Bahraini Fakhriya Hassan, 42, and injured her three children.
Northern Governorate chief prosecutor Adnan Fakhro yesterday said the lawyer was confronted with a medical examiner’s report that showed the body of the deceased did not bear any injuries.
It also attributed his death to a heart attack.
“The Public Prosecution investigated the incident of a lawyer who disseminated false matters about the death of an inmate in Dry Dock Detention Centre on July 30 this year, which the Special Investigation Unit has investigated and shelved after it was proved that the death was natural and had no criminal suspicion,” said Mr Fakhro.
“The lawyer stated in a local newspaper on August 11 that there were wounds and bruises on the body of the deceased which leaves no doubt that there is a criminal suspicion behind his death.
“The prosecution questioned the lawyer about what he had said and confronted him with a visual recording and photographs of the corpse before and after autopsy that clearly showed there were no injuries.
Natural
“A medical examiner’s report was also presented to him and it showed there were no injuries and that the cause of death was natural, as he died of a heart attack.
“He said that the information he got was supplied to him from other people and that he did not verify.
“He also said that the recording and the photographs that were shown to him prove there were no injuries, as opposed to what he said to the newspaper.
“He was charged with publicly disseminating false information to affect those making decisions in the case.”
