A family at war over an image posted on social media left one cousin with a permanent injury, another behind bars and a third facing a military court.
One of them has been jailed for three years for assaulting his close family member with a metal bar and leaving him in a pool of his own blood over the Facebook photograph.
The 36-year-old Bahraini was found guilty of assault by the High Criminal Court.
He was arrested after attacking his 50-year-old cousin in Hamad Town in December last year.
The defendant and the victim were on their way to preform Fajr (dawn) prayer when their paths crossed and the incident took place.
The victim suffered a five per cent permanent injury to his head due to skull fractures, according to a medical report.
He described how he was nearly killed over a family picture, which the defendant did not like when he spotted it on social media.
A second relative, also the victim’s cousin, is accused of assault and will be standing trial at a military court in connection with the same incident.
“He (the defendant who has been jailed for three years) said that he will take revenge because I put a picture of members of my family, which he said he had an issue with,” the 50-year-old retired Bahraini said as he described his ordeal to prosecutors.
“He commented on that picture and said that he will hurt me. I was going to perform Fajr (dawn) prayer before my cousins attacked me with a metal bar and left me in a pool of blood.
“I was screaming in pain, before a passer-by helped me and took me to a hospital.
“I cannot believe I was nearly killed over a picture I posted of members of my family. Both my cousins (defendants) have anger issue and are known for being troublemakers.”
