A MAN will now spend only 12 months in jail in a case of a woman falling from a three-storey building.
The 34-year-old Turkish defendant was initially charged with attempted murder after he was accused of pushing the Thai prostitute from the building in Manama.
However, the High Criminal Court ruled that the act was not deliberate and found him guilty of only assault.
He was jailed for three years.
Following an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court, his sentence was reduced to 12 months.
“The victim agreed to have sex with the defendant in return for BD20,” read the appeal court ruling.
“The deal was for an hour and when the defendant insisted on another hour, the woman resisted and an argument broke out between them.
“The victim, who was drunk, tried to flee by jumping out of the window on the third floor.
“However, she soon realised the danger and sought the defendant’s help as she clung to the window.
“The defendant hastily pulled her fingers following which she lost her grip and fell to the ground.
“The court finds 12 months behind bars to be an appropriate ruling.”
The victim had to undergo a surgery for fractures in her jaw and legs.
The defendant previously denied any knowledge of the incident when he appeared in court. He said he had left his apartment to buy groceries when he saw a woman bleeding on the ground and called for assistance.
However, three Bangladeshi men who worked in the same building testified against the defendant.
According to court documents, the Turkish man’s semen was found on the victim’s clothes.
The defendant will be deported after completing his sentence.
