MORE than 97,000 tonnes of household waste were cleared from the Capital Governorate in the first six months of this year, it has emerged.
The Capital Trustees Authority also cleared around 15,723.95 tonnes of construction waste from the governorate in addition to 5,397.17 tonnes of agricultural waste and 6,683.38 tonnes of industrial or commercial waste.
Details of the cleanliness services, which included the removal of 97,223 tonnes of household waste, were revealed by the Capital Trustees Authority yesterday through the Hygiene Department’s semi-annual report.
According to the report, 40 per cent of household waste in Bahrain was plastic.
“A total of 26,543km of road were swept while 1,676 violating advertisements were removed in the first six months of this year by the department,” said the authority on its official Instagram account.
“Meanwhile, 437 dilapidated or abandoned homes were cleared along with 43 scrap vehicles, 713 wandering vendors and 13 boats or carts.
“A total of 983 road occupation violations were also removed along with 181 dead animal carcasses, 157 abandoned or ‘for sale’ vehicles and 358 construction violations.
“Of the 983 road occupation violations – 160 were removed in January, 97 in February, 166 in March, 182 in April, 204 in May and 174 in June while the majority of illegal advertisements (365 out of 1,676) were removed in January.”
According to the report, 3,772 loads of sewage waste were vacuumed by tankers from the Capital Governorate in the same period.
The GDN previously reported that new integrated and comprehensive sewage treatment projects are on the way in Bahrain as the country seeks to be 100 per cent connected over the next four years.
According to a previous statement by former Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf, 172 new sewage projects have been identified from 2023-2026 to achieve the intended target.
As previously reported, 83.9pc of the areas in the Capital Governorate are connected to the sewage network, while it was 87pc in the Muharraq Governorate, 69.4pc in the Northern Governorate and 89.89pc in the Southern Governorate.
“When it comes to scrap vehicles, a total of 808 notices were sent out to owners, 45 vehicles were removed by the Capital Trustees Authority, 394 were removed by owners and 369 are pending removal,” added the report.
“Meanwhile, 411 notifications were sent out regarding construction or building violations, 357 notices for extraordinary waste – such as furniture – were distributed and 227 for agricultural waste.
“A total of 49,796 garbage bags were distributed at the Manama Central Market while 32,845 bags were dispensed through distribution machines in the first six months of this year.”
