A MOTHER and her teenage son are alleged to have stolen BD11,000 from a bank account belonging to her former husband and the child’s father, via the BenefitPay app.
The missing money came to light after the 65-year-old Bahraini man reported to the authorities that he suspected his 17-year-old son had transferred funds to two bank accounts whilst using his smartphone to play popular Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).
The defendants both denied the charges yesterday at the High Criminal Court.
The claimant, who had six sons and a daughter with his 43-year-old ex-wife, said that he was shocked to find out that he had allegedly been scammed after returning from a trip abroad.
“I was married to my ex-wife and we divorced in 2020,” he said in his statement to prosecutors.
“She got custody of the children and then filed for alimony in July 2021, after I came from Pakistan.
“I had BD14,000 and discovered that I only have BD3,000 left. I then found out that the money had been sent from my mobile phone, using the e-wallet, to two other accounts, including a relative’s account.
“He (the relative) then told me that my son had sent him the money but needed it because a family member was sick abroad. I remember my son had used my phone to play games and I later found out about the scam.”
The trial has been adjourned until Tuesday for review.
