Al Kindi Hospital has announced the joining of renowned obstetrics, gynaecology, oncology, urogynaecology and laparoscopic surgery consultant Dr Amarjit Kaur Sandhu to its team of experts.
Dr Sandhu has more than 55 years of clinical and teaching experience, out of which, more than 38 years have been in Bahrain.
After completing her undergraduation and post-graduation in India, Dr Sandhu went to the UK for her fellowship and also for her training in oncology.
During her time in the kingdom, Dr Sandhu has been intensively involved with some of the most difficult, life-saving surgeries and taught undergraduate and post-graduate students who are now in very senior positions in Bahrain and abroad.
“When I came to Bahrain in 1984, I joined as a senior specialist in Salmaniya Medical Complex,” Dr Sandhu told the GDN. “At this time, Salmaniya was the only referral hospital and I was dealing with all the difficult cases and life-threatening conditions and I also had to train the doctors who were working with me.
“We had four consultants but the workload was quite heavy, because Salmaniya was the only tertiary care hospital and we were dealing with all the life-threatening conditions.
“I took it as a challenge and I handled the surgeries. I have also trained so many doctors, who are now working as consultants and even as ministers,” she added.
Dr Sandhu has been teaching at the Arabian Gulf University since 1984, saying her passion for teaching knows no bounds.
“I feel the way that students love you is really something so pure,” she explained. “I am still teaching undergraduates and post-graduates at the university in the same department.”
Even at 80 years of age, Dr Sandhu is still going strong and has taken on her brand-new role at Al Kindi Hospital with gusto. “After all these years, I still find that work is my happiness and it gives me so much of peace when I serve people.
“Since it began in 2008, Al Kindi has been a very prestigious hospital.
“The chief executive at the hospital, Dr Ebtisam Al Dallal, is my friend and she has always told me that Al Kindi is my home and that I could join at any time.
“I know that Al Kindi is one of the leading hospitals in the kingdom as it is the only one which has been credited with the ‘Diamond’ status by the National Health Regulatory Authority.
“This hospital is exceptional because it provides medical and surgical procedures in a very advanced state.
“It also has advanced laproscopic facilities and I am lucky to be a member of a very prestigious, friendly and warm environment,” she concluded.
Dr Sandhu is specialised in the treatment of cancer in the female organs and has completed valuable research work, having written more than 70 scientific papers that have been published in national and international journals.
