Bahrain has affirmed that giving up nuclear weapons is the only way to ensure these weapons are not used by countries or by any party, stressing the importance of making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons.
It called for all nuclear facilities in the region to be subjected to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s supervision and safeguards, urging all states to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and to subject their nuclear programmes and facilities to the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards system.
This came in a statement delivered by Bahrain’s permanent representative to the agency, Ambassador Dr Yusuf Abdulkarim Bucheeri, marking the 66th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, which concludes today.
He said the kingdom considers nuclear weapons and their proliferation a threat to regional and international peace and stability, which requires collective action to protect regional security and the interests of countries in the region, in support of achieving security and stability.
He reiterated Bahrain’s call on Iran to fully co-operate with the agency and refrain from harming the region and neighbouring countries which are committed to their efforts to establish a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
Meanwhile, Bahrain condemned the Iranian artillery and missile attacks on several areas in the Kurdistan region in Iraq.
The attacks resulted in a number of deaths and injuries as well as material losses and destruction of infrastructure.
The Foreign Ministry expressed full solidarity with Iraq and its support for efforts to preserve its security, stability, unity and territorial integrity.
The ministry condemned any attack on its sovereignty or a threat to the safety of the Iraqi people.
