A domestic worker in Dubai who attempted to sell her baby on social media for Dh12,000 has been sentenced to three years in prison by a Dubai court.
Police foiled the attempted sale by setting up a string operation after being tipped off by social media users.
The 35-year-old tried to sell her newborn as she ‘needed money’, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.
Two other women aided her in her effort to find a buyer.
One of the accomplices advertised the two-month-old baby boy for sale in an online post made in February of last year.
An undercover policewoman contacted the woman to meet in Jumeirah for the purchase of the baby.
The officer received the child after handing over the agreed fee to the woman. Police later arrested the mother and her co-accused.
During interrogation, the child's mother admitted that the baby was born out of an illicit relationship and that she had tried to sell him because she needed the money.
All three accused have been convicted for human trafficking and sentenced to three years in prison each. They also face deportation after serving their sentence.
The baby has been placed in a specialised child care shelter.
