The Group IV Asia/Oceania Qualifiers Championship of the Davis Cup 2022, hosted by the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF), began yesterday at the BTF courts in Isa Town with a simple opening ceremony.
It included a display queue for the referees and ball boys, followed by the entry of the nine teams participating in the tournament, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Guam, Bhutan, Cambodia, Angola, Laos, Singapore and Turkmenistan and Bahrain’s national anthem. The teams are divided into two groups with Bahrain in Group B along with Kuwait, Guam, Singapore and Laos, while Group A includes Turkmenistan, Cambodia, Bhutan and Angola.
Bahrain’s young squad, who are competing in the Davis Cup qualifiers for the first time, took on Singapore in their opener and were outplayed 3-0 by the experienced members of the visiting team.
Singapore’s Shahid Alam defeated Hamad Abdul A’al by 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles match, and Fares Al Tubli lost to Singapore’s Roy Hobbs 1-6, 1-6.
In the doubles match, Bahraini duo Ashraf Yousef and Abdul A’al lost to Mikael Dylan Jiménez and Ethan Lee 1-6, 3-6.
In another match of the same group, Kuwait defeated Guam 3-0, with Issa Qabazard beating Derek Okuhama in the first singles 6-2, 6/2, Bader Al Abdullah ensured the victory defeating Camdeon Pinty 6-1, 6-1. The Kuwaiti doubles pair of Al Abdullah and Qabazard completed the whitewash beating Camden Camacho and Daniel Larinas 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (4).
In a Group A match, Cambodia beat Bhutan 3-0.
Four matches will be played today with Bahrain taking on Guam and Kuwait playing Laos in Group B, while Cambodia take on Mongolia, and Turkmenistan play Bhutan in Group A.
