A highways worker was tragically killed and four others were injured in an horrific road traffic accident yesterday morning.
The authorities say a motorist lost control of his vehicle, swerved and ploughed into the labourers and a police vehicle.
The men were part of a road improvement detail working on Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway, according to an Interior Ministry tweet.
The incident happened near Bilad Al Qadeem towards King Fahad Causeway at around 7am. Roadworks on major highways are often scheduled to take place early on weekend mornings to lessen disruption during peak hours of the working week.
The injured men were rushed by ambulance to hospital. Their conditions are unknown. The body of the deceased labourer, later identified as 57-year-old Indian expatriate Narsaiah Yedapalli, was taken to the morgue.
The GMC car involved was also removed from the scene shortly afterwards, its windscreen shattered as shoes and a displaced helmet belonging to the highways repair team lay amidst the debris.
Legal proceedings have been opened by police against the driver. Sources at the scene told the GDN that a Saudi national was arrested, breathalysed and is currently being questioned in connection with the incident.
