Bahrain has announced the discovery of two natural gas reservoirs.
They have been discovered in the Al Joubah and Al Jawf unconventional layers, located under the Khuf and Unayzah natural gas-producing reservoirs.
Details were revealed after His Majesty King Hamad was yesterday given an overview of the discoveries during a meeting, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, by Nogaholding chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who is also the King’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs.
Nogaholding board members also attended the meeting at Sakhir Palace.
Additional drilling operations are scheduled to be conducted over the coming two years to test both layers, Al Taweel and Al Sara, which are located below the Al Jawf gas reservoir, in addition to horizontal drilling in the Al Joubah well to improve productivity.
“The announcement of this discovery comes after carrying out evaluation drilling and testing operations in the Al Joubah reservoir and the completion of two wells in the Al Jawf,” Shaikh Nasser said.
Results of the process are encouraging in terms of quantity and production opportunities, he pointed out.
These discoveries, he said, are in line with the vision of the King and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to optimise the value of Bahrain’s natural resources, Shaikh Nasser said.
The finds “have provided us with the valuable information needed to conduct further evaluations of the wells to benefit from all the potential of this promising natural gas resource”, he added.
The King commended Shaikh Nasser and Nogaholding board members for their efforts to develop the oil and gas sector.
He said the new discoveries will support the national economy and spur growth.
His Majesty was also updated about future projects and strategic initiatives set out for next year to develop the sector.
‘Unconventional’ reservoirs can cost-effectively produce gas only by using a special stimulation technique, like hydraulic fracturing, other special recovery process and technology. This is often because the gas is highly dispersed in the rock, rather than occurring in a concentrated underground location.
Tatweer Petroleum Company has undertaken all implementation of the drilling operations and other related activities.
