Two women were elected in the first round of voting in National Elections 2022, while 15 face a run-off on Saturday.
A total of 94 women were contesting in the polls, 74 for Parliament seats and 20 for municipal council seats.
With 3,202 votes Zainab Abdulamir retained her seat in Parliament from Capital Governorate constituency seven (Jid Ali, Jurdab and Al Nasfa), while Zaina Jassim was re-elected for a municipal council seat from Northern Governorate constituency seven (Al Qaraya, west Janabiya, Buri and Hamala) with 2,729 votes.
According to election rules, any candidate securing a clear margin of more than 50 per cent votes is declared the winner.
The nine female Parliament candidates facing a run-off are:
Zainab Al Hayki (Capital Governorate constituency three covering Sanabis, Daih, Karbabad and the Seef District); Jalila Sayed (Capital Governorate constituency eight covering Nabih Saleh and north Sitra); Eman Showaiter (Capital Governorate constituency 10 covering West Eker, Sanad and South Isa Town); Kaltham Al Hayki (Northern Governorate constituency one covering Meqsha, Helat Al Abd Al Saleh, Bahrain Fort village, Karranah, Janusan, Barbar, Jid Al Haj and parts of Duraz); Maryam Al Sayegh (Northern Governorate constituency five covering Al Qadam, Al Hajar, Abu Saiba, Shakhoora, Saar, south Janabiya and Maqaba); Basma Mubarak (Northern Governorate constituency 11 covering Hamad Town (south) and Dar Kulaib); Hanan Ali (Northern Governorate constituency 12 covering Demistan, Malkiya, Karzakan and Al Louzy); Maryam Al Dhaen (Southern Governorate constituency two covering Isa Town East); and Lulwa Al Rumaihi (Southern Governorate constituency 10 covering Al Qarain, Umm Jadar Al Saman, Jasaira, Rumaitha, Shabak, Hawar Islands, Durrat Al Bahrain and Khalifa Town).
Meanwhile, the six women heading to a run-off in the municipal council elections are:
Sitting councillor Badriya Abdulhussain (Northern Governorate constituency two covering Duraz, Bani Jamra and Al Markh); Suad Khalaf (Northern Governorate constituency six covering A’ali and Ramli); Zainab Al Derazi (Northern Governorate constituency 12 covering Demistan, Malkiya, Karzakan and Al Louzy); Dalal Al Muqahwi (Muharraq Governorate constituency two covering middle Muharraq Station); Layali Haider (Muharraq Governorate constituency four covering Halat Abu Maher, Al Ghous Corniche and old Muharraq Suq); and Eman Abdulla (Southern Governorate constituency one covering Isa Town West).
In the 2018 elections, six women won Parliament seats – Fouzia Zainal, Dr Sawsan Kamal, Dr Masooma Abdulrahim, Kaltham Al Hayki, Zainab Abdulamir and Fatima Al Qatari, while four women won municipal council seats: Eman Abdulla, Badriyah Abdulhussain, Zaina Jassim and Zainab Al Derazi.
