Happy New Year to all, 2023 will be a great year!
Reading the Gulf Daily News: ‘Russian hackers target US nuclear scientists’ (Saturday, January 7 on Page 9), I am alarmed that this article has no reference as to who wrote it.
I know the Gulf Daily News takes this article from a ‘reliable’ news supplier, such as Thomson Reuters, Warner Bros. (ha ha ha), and others.
However, my question is, who verifies any of these stories are true? I mean this article refers to ‘cyber security experts’, Internet records, cyber security researchers, western government officials, UN experts, Reuters; not exactly transparent, and why the secrecy? We, the public deserve to know the sources of these stories.
In the past the newspapers printed the source of their articles, why was this protocol stopped?
I understand this is sensitive to the Globalist view of life, however, I would appreciate it if the Gulf Daily News could answer this question.
I sincerely wish the Gulf Daily News success for the New Year, Happy 2023!
Editor’s reply:
Dear Mr Mansouri,
The article you refer to clearly states that the internet records were reviewed by Reuters and five cyber security experts, so I cannot understand your suggestion that the source of the article is not clearly identified in this case.
This Reuters exclusive investigation revealed that a Russian hacking team known as Cold River targeted the Brookhaven (BNL), Argonne (ANL) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL), according to Internet records that showed the hackers creating fake login pages for each institution and emailing nuclear scientists in a bid to make them reveal their passwords.
GDN Media is a subscriber to the Reuters News Service, established in London in 1851. It is one of the largest news agencies in the world.
Reuters was unable to determine why the labs were targeted or if any attempted intrusion was successful. A BNL spokesperson declined to comment. LLNL did not respond to a request for comment. An ANL spokesperson referred questions to the US Department of Energy, which declined to comment.
Cold River has escalated its hacking campaign against Kyiv’s allies since the invasion of Ukraine, according to cybersecurity researchers and Western government officials. Russia denies any knowledge or involvement and, to this specific article, its embassy in Washington did not respond to emailed requests for comment.
Our intelligent readers can make up their own minds.
Thank you for the New Year good wishes.
