A FORMER convict who has served eight years in jail is standing trial again, for allegedly assaulting a police officer who was trying to arrest him.
The 37-year-old Bahraini man who denied the charges at the High Criminal Court yesterday was in hospital for a broken leg in December last year when the incident took place.
Officers had gone to the King Hamad University Hospital to execute an arrest order when the defendant allegedly resisted being taken into custody, hitting a policeman.
According to court documents, the defendant had previously completed a three-year jail sentence after being found guilty of assaulting a public employee.
In the current case’s first court hearing, the main judge allowed the defendant to speak and give his side of the story.
He told the court that he wanted to stay out of trouble, and had no reason to commit the assault.
“I was in prison for eight years; I don’t want to go back,” he told judges.
“My future is already gone; I want to get married and spend time with my blind mum.
“After I was arrested, I was not allowed to relieve myself, even though my leg was broken and I have diabetes,” the defendant, who lives in Muharraq, claimed.
“So, I soiled myself in public.
“Thankfully, a policeman bathed me, God bless him.”
The arresting police officer had told Public Prosecution about the incident, alleging that the defendant resisted being handcuffed and caused a scene in the hospital.
The hearing was adjourned to Sunday for defence arguments.
