Inmate on hunger strike at the Jaw Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre decided to suspend their action yesterday, citing improvement in services provided to them, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has announced.
Following the third visit by its members, during which they met centre officials and a number of inmates, those on hunger strike started having their meals, stating that the services had started improving, the institution said, adding that some of the issues needed more time or legislative action.
A number of inmates told the delegation that visiting hours had been re-scheduled, daylight visiting hours had been extended and the number of inmates allowed to call increased, the NIHR said. The prisoners highlighted several issues related to the development of healthcare services at the centre, which were recorded by the team and will be presented to relevant authorities in government hospitals, it added.
The institution said it will pay close attention to all matters related to prisoners’ rights, stressing its keenness to consider all requests.
